Description

My research within Indigenous Methodology is focuses on showing others the importance of language conservation among indigenous communities and people. How much affect this subject can have on a community, its residents, and the culture. An example I plan to use within this project is my grandparents, as they are fluent in our Hopi language that is spoken repeatedly around me allowing me to develop an understanding of how things are said. This is considered a useful example as it is rooted from elders who are able to translate the Hopi language into English which can allow myself to develop a clearer understanding of this subject matter that I can present to others outside of the community I grew up in. I feel that this project will not only impact the primary tribe of focus but all people in our generation that grew up in an indigenous community and how their language protects their own cultural identities. Those who come from outside of a native tribe are also able to grasp an understanding of how precious our indigenous language is and why conservation is critical for preserving cultural and traditional knowledge. Indigenous languages shape knowledge by the prioritization of oral approaches which allows a non fragmented approach of passing down traditions. Language is used as a complexed system of knowledge that frames a cultures understanding of the world including spiritual and environmental settings. The use of indigenous language ensures that a cultures traditions concepts are not misinterpreted but rather sustained.
